I have oily skin. And for the longest time, I genuinely thought the solution was to dry it out as much as possible.

Harsh face wash twice a day. Alcohol toner. Skip moisturiser completely. If my skin felt tight and squeaky clean, I assumed I was doing something right.

I was doing everything wrong.

My skin kept getting oilier. My pores looked bigger. And the more products I tried, the worse things got. Sound familiar?

Here is what actually changed things for me, and why it works specifically for Indian skin in Indian weather.

Why Indian Skin Gets So Oily

India is hot. India is humid. And our skin responds to that environment by producing more sebum than it would in a cooler, drier climate.

Add genetics to the mix and you have a recipe for a shiny face by 10 AM regardless of what you do.

But here is what nobody told me for years. The reason most people with oily skin cannot control their shine has nothing to do with their skin type. It has everything to do with how they are treating it.

When you strip your skin with harsh products, it panics. It thinks it is dehydrated. So it produces even more oil to compensate. You wash more. It produces more oil. This cycle is the reason your skin is oily. Not your genes.

Step 1: Stop Using the Wrong Cleanser

Most Indian face washes marketed for oily skin are way too harsh. They leave your face feeling squeaky clean, which feels satisfying but is actually your skin barrier screaming.

You want a gentle foaming or gel cleanser with salicylic acid between 0.5% and 2%. This ingredient is oil-soluble, meaning it actually gets inside your pores and cleans them out from the inside rather than just cleaning the surface.

Niacinamide is a form of Vitamin B3. It tells your sebaceous glands to calm down and produce less oil. It shrinks the appearance of pores. It fades the dark marks that every pimple leaves behind on Indian skin. And it does all of this without irritating your skin or causing a purge.

Three to four drops after cleansing. Let it absorb for 30 seconds. That is it.

Results take about four to six weeks to show up properly. I know that feels like a long time. But this is the kind of ingredient that actually changes your skin rather than just temporarily masking the problem.

Step 3: Yes, You Need a Moisturiser

I resisted this for months. My skin is already oily, why would I add more moisture?

The key word is lightweight. You want a gel-based or water-based formula that absorbs within seconds and leaves zero residue. Nothing creamy, nothing rich, nothing that sits on top of your skin.

Step 4: Sunscreen Is Not Optional

SPF 50, every single morning, even when it is cloudy, even when you are sitting indoors near a window. UV rays come through glass. I learned this the hard way.

For oily skin specifically, you need a matte finish sunscreen. The wrong sunscreen will make your T-zone look like a mirror by noon. The right one will be invisible.

What Your Night Routine Should Look Like

Night is when your skin actually repairs itself. This is when active ingredients do their real work.

Start with a double cleanse, micellar water first to remove sunscreen and pollution, then your regular face wash. If you skip this and go straight to one cleanse, your salicylic acid and other actives just sit on top of SPF and do nothing.

Two to three nights a week, use a BHA exfoliant after cleansing. Salicylic acid goes deep into pores and dissolves the oil and dead skin that causes blackheads. Start once a week and build up slowly.

Finish with a thin layer of your gel moisturiser. Simple, consistent, effective.

How Long Until You See Results

Week one and two, your skin might look the same or slightly worse as it adjusts. Do not panic.

Week three and four, active oiliness starts reducing. You stop needing blotting paper by 2 PM.

Week six to eight, pores look smaller. Dark marks start fading. Friends notice something is different but cannot figure out what.

Month three, you forget you ever had oily skin days.

The only way this does not work is if you quit during the adjustment phase. Most people give up in week two. Do not be most people.
